Remanufacturing Catalyst for the South East

The Remanufacturing Catalyst for the South East was set up to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of manufacturing processes.

It aims to help businesses move towards net zero and embrace a circular economy through remanufacturing and value retention processes.

Based at the University of 麻豆果冻传媒, the catalyst is part of a multimillion-pound research project involving six universities, industry partners, local authorities, and high-value catapults such as the Manufacturing Technology Centre.

Launched in 2024, it is using AI and intelligent automation to create a new manufacturing ecosystem that promotes cost-effective circular resource use and drives sustainable innovation.

What is remanufacturing?

Remanufacturing is the process of taking used products and restoring them to like-new condition, preserving their highest value.

Compared to traditional manufacturing, remanufactured products are between 20% to 40% cheaper to produce than new ones. They also have significant environmental benefits, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 79% to 99% and cutting new material use by 80% to 98% (UN IRP 2018).

As businesses face increasing demands to meet sustainability goals like Net Zero, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) targets, remanufacturing provides a valuable solution.

The benefits of remanufacturing

Remanufacturing helps businesses to reduce environmental impact and increase profits, as well as building resilience, reducing risk, and improving material security.

Leveraging advancements in AI, technology, and business models, remanufacturing enables:

  • sustainable procurement
  • value retention and life extension of assets
  • remanufacturing and electrification of transport and heavy-duty machinery
  • waste reduction
  • new product development.

From IT equipment to medical devices and electronic components, remanufacturing offers opportunities for businesses in multiple sectors.
